So one thing that's passed me by is that the video quality of PS3 backwards compatibility is dog shit. Of course, that shouldn't be much of a surprise to anyone.
Yet Woot had the crappy 20 Gig PS3's in stock yesterday and it sold out in 10 minutes.
I'm stunned at how much negative press this thing gets and people are STILL snapping them up. The loyalty of Sony fanboys is stunning. If you followed that YouTube link you could read some of the comments. Some of the comments even accuse the producer of doctoring the video! Yes YouTube has been invaded by idiots in the past year (and many of them are in the admin side of it, but that's another beef), but still, the lack of people thinking before they type is going to make my brain melt.
Now I DO have a beef with the suggestion that all it takes is a "simple firmware upgrade." Unless you're a member of the design engineering team at Sony of Japan, you don't know. Unless your contact person on the inside is a member of the design engineering team at Sony of Japan, you don't know. WE (the public) may never know what it really takes to fix it. Even comparing it to turning on filtering with DirectX is a fallacy since it doesn't run DirectX. I'm just completely shocked that it doesn't at least filter it. Thing is, filtering won't solve the issue, just make it less noticeable. The real answer is to rescale polygons and points to newer and higher resolution displays. Impossible? Maybe. Even then it won't look that great. I'm no expert, but I'm not sure HDMI can even describe low resolution modes.
But, you know, everyone likes backwards compatibility. But once you give them exactly that, they start complaining for more. Not to say that ugly filtering on PS3 and not letting the resolution change is an excuse, but you can't have both "looks exactly the same" and "looks better" in the same window. I can't believe units would ship with such a major problem.
Oh, wait, it's Sony.
My advice? Don't be a fanboy. Even if I could afford it and find it, I wouldn't get a PS3 right now. What's the blockbuster game? By the time a blockbuster game comes out, should we have faith that everything will be fixed? Well...
Sometime ago, the Gamecube lost it's digital video output. Since I don't have HDTV I simply never followed the happenings of anything HD. But I have to say I'm disappointed. They don't even make the cable anymore. Sheet, I can get a replacement screen for an old Game Boy Advance but I can't get a digital cable for the GC? Boooooo---
Ah well. Busy busy busy. MCSD coursework is taking over my life. That's unfortunate too.
